october 31 etc (let's go blue jays!)

๐ŸŽƒ Happy Halloween!

When I was younger I used to be a stickler for the apostrophe, i.e. "Hallowe'en," but eventually I let it go. I didn't want to, though. I was like, "but that's correct! Why wouldn't you do it correctly?"

I was nine years old.

There are a lot of people out there who have been called difficult for wanting things to be done correctly, or tactfully, or with care, or otherwise differently than is custom. When I say "custom" I mean "the norm" and I don't mean anything good by it, and when I say "difficult," I mean all the words people say when what they are really saying "I don't want to think about this so you shouldn't either."

It is hard to go through the world and realize, slowly, over time (and sometimes all at once) that a lot of other people are only comfortable when you see the world like they do. I am not talking about politics even though it seems like I am. Rather, I am talking about the weight people place on things. I am by most estimations a pretty smart and thoughtful guy but the number of times I have been written off as a dumb blockheaded boor because I am a big sports fan would blow your mind. Moreover, the number of times I have reduced people to a handful of salient but ultimately unimportant details and then judged them based on those details is, to my eternal shame, a number well above 0.

Life is interesting because we're all different. Pick any two sentient people on earth and if you eliminate the language barrier, I bet you'd find that those two people, in a vacuum, have a ton of things in common and could put down the foundation for some kind of friendship. This doesn't mean they would be bffs, but it suggests they could coexist in the same space with minimal trouble.

Sameness, on the other hand, is boring. I suppose I get the appeal, but people are far too complex to ever smooth out en masse.

Anyway, today millions upon millions of people are going to experiment with being someone else for a few hours โ€”โ€“ and the younger millions will be rewarded for it. Maybe there's a lesson in there somewhere.
