I wrote a great joke today and laughing at it sustained me through some pretty bad sciatica. "Laughter is the best medicine" is a corny thing to say, but sometimes it's kind of true. From concept to execution, by which I mean the right wording, the right balance, the right button, etc, the whole thing took about ten minutes. I loved every second of those ten minutes. It's kind of weird to be this deep a career as a writer (whatever that means anymore) and still have moments like that. Delightful weird, not weird weird. The kind of weird you're grateful for. It's fun to love a thing enough to get good at it, which I have because I do, but if I'm being honest, I got good at it because I wanted to be understood, seen, and counted, and thought writing well, understanding how to structure things juuuuust so, was the easiest and most efficient route. Like, if I could communicate my needs, wants, and whatever else, I'd stand a better chance of getting those needs and wants met. Right? Well, kind of. It's true in theory, but in practice the receiver needs to be attuned to your frequency or it's going to go bad.
