Tonight is Game 1 of the World Series and at this very moment, countless Blue Jays fans and a few hundred scalpers/gougers are engaged in a game of chicken, waiting on the other to blink first. The cheapest resale ticket to Game 1 was around $3,000 USD on Stubhub a day after they went on sale. A few hours ago they were about $850 USD. Right now they are around $1,000 USD. Closer to game time (8pm ET) they will likely be cheaper but I'm not looking looking I'm just looking.
My friend, however, is looking looking because he's going, "solo if needed" as he told me on Discord, which he punctuated with "once in a lifetime bro" a few moments later. I've been to a World Series game (G3 vs. Atlanta in 1992) and had tickets to another one (gave my G6 vs. Philadelphia tickets ββ yes, that game ββ to my mom) so I get it. If you can be there, you should be there.
I hope he gets one that doesn't set him back too much but even if he has to break the bank, he'll be fine. Besides, it's important that he goes. Watching him go from an "I think I'll give baseball a try!" guy to a "I will go on a killing spree if anyone even thinks about heckling Ernie Clement" guy over like three years has been inspiring. He likes to remind me that we were at the ballpark sitting in some of the highest and cheapest seats in the building when the Blue Jays concluded a train wreck of 2024 season by getting swept at home by the moribund Miami Marlins (62-100) to finish 74-88 and in last place in the division. I like to remind him that things are always better than they seem and that good things are almost always on the other side of giving a shit and actually trying.

I'm a superstitious person and as the Jays have won all four playoff games I have watched at the wing joint/bar down the street (G1 vs. NYY, G4, G6, G7 vs. SEA), my partner and I will be watching from there. As per custom I will invariably spend like $100 on Corona Zeros and lose my voice yelling. As per custom I will be wearing my XL Lady Gaga Joanne tour t-shirt because the Jays are 7-1 when I wear it to the stadium or the bar in 2025.
I don't know that I can fully communicate how delightful and sublime and surreal it is that all of this is happening. I love the Blue Jays and baseball and I know more about baseball than I know about anything (and I know a lot about a lot of things) and I am the eternal optimist re: the Jays and even I didn't see this coming ββ though I absolutely said that we could win the division when we beat the Cardinals on my birthday in June. That said, a lot of things can go right if you put the ball in play and as we know each other a little bit, now, I don't think I should have to clarify that I'm not only talking about baseball.

βΎβ€οΈ Optimism aside, I don't think that even I would have imagined that Trey Yesavage would start Game 1 of the World Series for the Blue Jays against Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers when he was drafted a year ago and started this season in Low-A but here were are and so it's not at all weird that the inimitable hausofdecline has immortalized our young hero in a comic.
