I was talking to Daniel about our Substack project and this came out:
I know it can't go 100mph. I'm just impatient. And I'm usually a patient guy I guess I just really want this to be something and I'm coming to terms with that bit by bit, in real time, forever, always.
Wanting things is one thing. Wanting things out of a creative project is something else. We all want things. We all deserve to want things. But if you want things in relation to something you are making, and the thing you are making is for public consumption and maybe even purchase, someday, you cannot cannot cannot cannot get lost in it. You can't peg the way you feel about yourself, about people, and about the world to how that creative thing and its constituent ideas and ideals fares in that world. You simply cannot. To do so is to chain yourself to an anchor and then throw it overboard. The market is both wise and fickle. People are sometimes brilliant and sometimes very dumb.
The ugly, honest truth of the situation:
Sometimes the work is good and the public eats it up.
Sometimes the work is bad and the public still eats it up.
Sometimes the work is good and the public is like "meh."
Sometimes the work is bad and the public is like "meh."
Sometimes people miss the originator and love the copy.
Sometimes people don't like things that make them think.
Sometimes people don't like things that don't.
Sometimes a skinny leg is in style.
At others, people want a wide leg.
The thing that matters is the work, and what goes into the work. So the work better make you happy, boyo, because ain't nothing a sure thing.
