october 10 etc
Aside from the jubilation I felt when the Blue Jays eliminated the Yankees on Wednesday, it's been a tough week. I've been vaguely under the weather since we got back from Montreal but whatever's been plaguing me goes beyond that.
The week or two when the seasons actively change is always tough for me. My brain can only notice all the things it's not noticing. My body becomes little more than a vehicle to get me from place to place.
When I get numb like this I always go to the same wells:
ππ½ lifting weights
ππ½ fresh air (the cooler the better)
ππ½ trying a new restaurant or going to an old favourite
ππ½ consuming art around other people (theatre, film, galleries)
As such, last night night we:
β
walked in the fresh, crisp autumn air
β
tried Woojoo Bunsik for the first time
β
saw a series of shorts at film festival
β
grabbed some burritos from Latin World for the millionth time
Last night was the closing night of the Toronto Arthouse Film Festival and we went to support my friend and frequent collaborator Nora Rosenthal, whose film Nine Easy Dances was being screened alongside other shorts.
First things first: the films were all wonderful.
Second things second: in the darkness of the theatre I felt like I was healing. Afterwards, all I could think about was making a short film of my own, even if it was a quick little iPhone jobber I made in a weekend like Mark Duplass recommends people do.
Audrey Hepburn once said "to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." Wanting to make things is more or less the same thing.
If you're in Toronto and want to try to make a short with me, lmk.
On y va!

ππ The God Man (dir. Andrew Foerster) was one of our favourites from last night's slate and as it's on YouTube, I'm passing it along to you guys. Suggestion: watch this on a normal-sized screen (i.e. not just your phone) with the lights down. (YouTube)
