Below please find the post I wrote before going to bed last night but didn't "publish" because I passed out with one Airpod in my ear playing the audio from an old Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode.
At the bottom of this post you will see (and have likely already seen) that I am rebooting (sort of) DMail, an old email newsletter/publication thing of mine that a lot of people liked for a number of years. I say "sort of" because in the four (or whatever) years since I last published an issue of DMail, my views and thoughts re: writing and the internet have not changed as much as they've grown thicker and more complex. Getting booze sober and staying booze sober influenced part of this; after a few years off the sauce, I could almost feel my dendrites growing back like cilia do after you quit smoking, and eventually a lot of my thoughts and ideas started talking to each other and then, for the first time in my life, writing got easier.
Connections happened quicker. Structure happened more naturally. I could see the code falling from the ceiling.
As such, the new thing won't be called DMail, and won't be a shot-for-shot remake of what DMail was. Before old heads fret, I'm still going to make playlists. That said, it will be DMail-ish in nature.
DMail, at its heart, was about helping people enjoy the internet more, something I thought was necessary given how bad the internet experience had become. Since then, the internet and the experience of being
a) a person on the internet
b) a person who uses the internet
has changed, becoming worse in some ways and better in others.
Returning to my indieweb roots —– i.e. the catalyst behind starting this blog —— helped me get back to a lot of my earliest thoughts about the internet, which will hopefully end up in a book or a dissertation someday. The long and the short of what I'm saying here, though, is simply that DMail (which I wrote in Revue, which doesn't exist anymore) was a continuation of Less Than Ø, which I wrote as a TinyLetter (which doesn't exist anymore).
TL;DR the DMail reboot won't be an actual reboot and it won't be called DMail. Right now the working name is combatdavey dot whatever but I'm not married to that.
