I'm writing this from the couch at my partner's family's home in Victoria, BC, while looking out the window at trees, clouds, and the mighty and unknowable Pacific Ocean.
For many, nature provides a soothing balm in tough times and reminds us that life is quietly happening all around us regardless of whatever else may be happening. The world rumbles onwards regardless of who lives, who dies, who loses in Game 7 of the World Series, and so on. I have never been soothed by nature. Awed, sure. Soothed? Not so much. Nature is awesome and terrifying. Its grandness never makes me feel anything but small, and while being small is fine, feeling small almost never is.
