I posted this earlier today.

Anyway as I mentioned there, as much as I'm completely over brand anthropomorphism on social, I will always, always have a soft spot for whoever is running the various Wendy's accounts. The Wendy's folks basically invented the genre. They've been a fun version of unhinged since before it was cool and well before it was overdone.

There was a time when all I really wanted to do was write brand tweets, a thing that became a job back in 2009. I was a web-obsessed early-adopter and copywriter in 2009 and there was a clear fit there. My first jobs in social were writing posts (including tweets) for brands. I started small, but in late 2011 I was the guy writing/adminning Coca-Cola Canada's Twitter account. (Later I would do work in social that would make the Coca-Cola stuff look small time.)

The Coke job wasn't nearly as cool as it could have been. I had to get tweets approved before posting and the people who did the approvals usually took 3-5 days to respond. We tried to explain that social doesn't move nearly that slowly, but it didn't matter. In retrospect I think even in 2011 the big brands knew they were going to be the ones making the rules before too long.

The only thing I truly remember from my time at that agency was that a trust fund creep I worked with who loved to pretend he was my boss (he wasn't) started running his mouth at me when I was working overtime one day. With my calmest, deepest, and most severe voice I said something like "I think you should reconsider your tone" and the implication that I was thinking of making a jack-o-lantern out of his head was pretty clear.

I know it's morally incorrect but I still get a little shiver of satisfaction when I think about making him feel afraid. Guys like that are always so happy to bully other people yet they're so, so breakable.

One day when I have nothing to lose I will tell everyone all the things I know about all the creeps and sociopaths who work in music, media, marketing, and advertising in this country but until then

I am very excited by this opportunity because ever since I was a little kid I dreamed of creating shareholder value! Yes I am comfortable with a three days in the office because I actually I prefer the office! I might even work there when I don't have to!
