I was a Knicks fan growing up. I loved Ewing, hated Jordan, and thought (correctly, btw) that most of the Bulls fans I grew up around were bandwagoners or otherwise folks who liked the Bulls because they liked Jordan, by which I mean they knew they were supposed to think Jordan was the best so they cheered for him and the team as whole incidentally. I thought that was dishonest. I was 11.
I've always been this person. I've always tried to figure things out, no matter what the things were, so that I could determine the best, most honest, most pure way of doing a thing. This has rubbed people the wrong way since the late 1980s, and I'll be the first one to admit that I can be a giant pain in the ass. It comes from a good place, and with the best of intentions, but I am aware that this approach to, well, everything, isn't how most people approach friendship, fandom, or whatever else. I'm aware. I know. It's also the only way I know how to do the thing.
There was a reason I was writing this, but it doesn't jive with the reason I am still writing this. Need to think, and maybe tinker.
More to come. Maybe.
