Last night the words poured out of me and I don't really know why. I had a terrible day and the news was awful as it always is these days and there was a lot of drama in one of my dynasty basketball leagues but the words came without a fight, all peaceable-like. I just closed my eyes and cast my memory back and
I was right back there
in that hotel lobby/not lobby
waiting to get a book signed
while a McGill classmate I had a crush on was holding court at the hotel bar being young, blonde, and terrrrrrribly interesting. A little less than a decade later I told that same person she had a drinking problem. A lot of people told her that. I don't know if everyone was thinking "is [redacted] going to be the person I know who lives hard, dies young, and leaves a good-looking corpse?" but I certainly was. She ended up getting help, quitting booze, and these days —— almost a quarter century after I told Douglas Coupland that "I be Dave" —— she's doing quite well.
One of these days I'm going to actually try to write a Sedaris-like book of vaguely braided essays that live within stories I've lived over the course of 47 weird and interesting years but for now I'm going to watch the last 3:25 of the San Antonio/Houston game.

🎵3️⃣ "Juice" by Chance the Rapper is one of those tracks I come back to every now and then, and, when I do, I remember being on buses, trains, and planes in 2013.
🎵🐦 Andrew Bird's "Are You Serious" that makes me think of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when I started understanding that furniture was language and that people fall in love with aesthetics. Obviously the song wasn't written and recorded back then, but I've always thought Bird's work is often defined by a quality of, like, light heaviness (but not heavy lightness).
🏀🎙️ Jon and I recorded our most recent episode of Red Black Comeback a few hours before before my Raptors and his Blazers did battle in the Rose City last Friday. It's pretty entertaining, so have at it —— and while you're having at it, please think about subscribing to Red Black Comeback wherever you subscribe to podcasts (except Spotify, natch).
🏀🏀 Jon also texted me this recently: "Chris Dudley is running for GOP for Oregon Governor. I think the Dems should just play this on loop the entire election: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dGJunYTAdns." I left the link raw for authenticity's sake —— but yes, NBA heads, it is exactly what you think it is.
🏀👀 Kendall Jenner, who has dated NBA players including Ben Simmons and Devin Booker, is in a new commercial for a sports betting app, and it's low-key amazing.
