I have an all-access digital subscription to the New York Times, and as we have a family subscription to Apple One, I have access to hundreds of newspapers and magazines on top of that. As a reader, this setup objectively rules. As a guy who recently stopped reading the news, it feels wasteful. The TL;DR is that I needed to take a break because the news was killing me.

Not, like, annoying me.

Not irritating me or bumming me out.

It was killing me, relieving me of pieces of my humanity a little bit at a time. So I took a timeout.

It's generally sensible to avoid pain, and yet for years and years (and years, and years) I thought (and spoke) poorly of people who told me in some way that they had taken a break from reading or watching the news. I thought pressing your face into the bandsaw that is the 24-hour news cycle (and, later, the up-to-the-second coverage offered on social media) was your responsibility as a citizen. I thought this because I was stupid because all young people are stupid. Especially the smart ones. Anyway, all of this is to say that even though I am aware of the general state of the world, for the first time in my adult life I don't actually know what's going on. At least for now, ignorance is bliss.
