december 8 etc

Had a weird week and chased it with a weird weekend. December just be like that sometimes. No matter what else you have going on, the holidays loom and schedules need to be figured out. I'm not much a planner and yet I know what I'm doing every night until we head west for the holidays —— and I already basically know what I'm doing there, too. Maybe it's better this way. Idle hands and all that.

This morning I remembered that while back I messed around with a post style meant as an homage and reference to Microserfs, my favourite book, but what came out looked like a copy of a copy of a copy. Maybe that was the point and I didn't understand it. Or maybe I'm just too close to it.

I often think about Microserfs around this time of year. I used to reread it every year in preparation for spending the holidays with my family if only to remind myself that even if I didn't feel like I belonged there, I had to be there anyway, and that going home can sometimes be okay. It never was, but I always arrived thinking this was the year —— and maybe I am better for it.

The way that book has been around for so many of my life's most interesting and awful moments is quite something. If you've never read it, I highly recommend doing so —— especially if you want to feel hopeful. Coupland was always good at that. I don't think I read much of his books after Girlfriend in a Coma. I have very sparse recollections of Miss Wyoming, All Families Are Psychotic, and Generation A, but much to the chagrin of many people who tried to get me to read it I never read jPod (and never will) because too many people said it was sorta kinda the sequel to Microserfs and there's only so much blasphemy a mf like me can abide.

Related: the fact that Microserfs holds a 3.89 on Goodreads, a platform I do not use and never trust for reviews, is infuriating to me –— but this is why I don't use Goodreads.

Related: if you go to sites like Goodreads or Letterboxd to figure out what you want to read or watch, I get it. They're incredibly useful sites. But if you consult the ratings on products before you buy them and in certain cases pass up the opportunity to buy something because of the ratings and negative comments, just know that I bought a new sit-stand (motor not crank) desk from IKEA recently but almost didn't because more than a few people gave the desk a bad review and complained that the screws were too long and ended up damaging the desktop by coming up through it. I am happy to report that the desk is great and the screws are fine and a lot of people are blaming user error on some nice folks in Sweden who are just trying to get through their annual monthlong fast from herring so that Jultomten will bring them presents to put together on Christmas morning.

If today taught me anything it's that a good night of sleep makes all the difference, so I'mma head out. I'm feeling a bit prolific though so if I were a betting man, I'd put money on me delivering the next part of the thing I started on December 3 this week.
