It's New Year's Eve. It's Hogmanay. It's time to sing or at least think about singing Auld Lang Syne, but it'd be better if we sang the lyrics as Robbie Burns wrote them (i.e. in Scots) and not as they've been rounded by time.
Compare this:
And surely ye'll be your pint-stoup!
and surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
With this:
And surely you'll buy your pint cup!
and surely I'll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And then compare this:
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
sin' auld lang syne.
With this:
We two have run about the hills,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we've wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.
Like, gimme the Scots every time.
Auld Lang Sidebar (1):
But seriously, flip through this if you want to be fascinated.
Auld Lang Sidebar (2):
This was the national anthem of South Korea from 1945-1948.
Auld Lang Sidebar (3):
There is no third sidebar. This is actually the end. I'm proud of both of us for getting here.
