The first morning you wake up in a different city is weird but if that different city is in a different time zone it's even weirder. You know what time it is but you don't. If you take medication your days/times are messed up and you end up taking your meds way earlier or way later than you usually do —— except you shouldn't because nothing is all that different even though it really, really seems that way. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not going to know what day or time it is until I get back to Toronto.
You may not know this but I am an avowed Vancouver hater. To me Vancouver is a very beautiful place to put a city but the city itself is somewhat soulless.
That said, from George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman:
The only man who behaved sensibly was my tailor: he took my measure anew every time he saw me, whilst all the rest went on with their old measurements and expected them to fit me.
This is my clumsy way of saying I came here determined to actually look for things I liked about Vancouver.
Vancouver places I visited, patronized, or otherwise enjoyed today:
Superbaba: Decent food at a reasonable price point, but I was taken aback by the fact that a) hot sauce was an extra 20 cents and b) the tip options were 12%, 16%, and 20%. Who tips 12%?
Turnabout: My parter looked at things including a Rick Owens dress and I sat in a comfy leather chair and caught up on trades in my dynasty leagues. I love a consignment store but this one didn't have much that appealed to me.
Welk's General Store : A+ selection of things, including but not limited to non-alcoholic beers, spirits, and canned cocktails —— but the aisles were crazy narrow and it was crazy busy and you can put the rest together. Truly nice staff tho.
Lucky's Books and Comics: A+ everything. Loved the place, and even though I bought a bunch of books and have limited space in my carry-on, I can almost assure you I'm going back before we head to Victoria.
Kingsgate Mall: I love a dirt mall. I especially love a dirt mall where people take pictures with Santa. In the Kingsgate we saw two young women pretend to be moody, sullen teenagers while sitting on Santa's lap/standing by his side and it was funny.
Generation Cannabis: Considering all the neon in the signage, I wanted the shirts to be better or at least pinker.
More tomorrow. Maybe.
