august 7 iir
I've got a milestone coming up and I'm low key excited about it for reasons including but not limited to that I like knowing the specific date something happened, or, as it pertains to the thing I am specifically talking about, the specific date I did something/something happened in my life.
For example:
- I received notice I got into McGill on June 11, 1997
- I (kinda) moved to Copenhagen on September 17, 2014
- I moved away from Montreal (the second time) on December 22, 2009
- I decided to quit drinking on July 6, 2020
- I moved away from Montreal (the third time) on August 31, 2022
- I saw Nikola Jokić play live for the first time on March 14, 2023
I've always had a head for dates (and numbers in general), which is likely why I am a sentimentalist. Knowing or remembering a date, in the abstract, is unimportant. It's a detail, a simple fact. Committing all those factual happenings to memory is possible, but it's somehwat pointless; to remember things simply to remember things is to suggest that everything is equally important, and, like everything is not equally important. (If it were, there would be a lot more books and no one would say dumb shit like, "it's not that deep.")
Rest assured I'll write about this when it's time.
