august 14 bmv
Every now and again I write my partner an email in the middle of the tonight and schedule-send it so it arrives in her inbox just as she's having her coffee. They're always really calm, gentle, and occasionally very swoony emails, but they're not overly dramatic declarations of love and devotion; I show that when I clean out the fridge.
Writing stuff for each other and with each other is something that permeates our thing. As I've written about before (see here and here), we regularly write down random weird ideas, concepts, names, or turns of phrase we come up with (oh, and insane or otherwise noteworthy things we overhear). I tell people this has to do with my tendency towards archiving things, but it's really about my once powerful memory starting to show signs of aging. That said, I do like to collect, curate, and archive and have small collections of many things, including iPods, ballcaps, and trade paperback copies of Douglas Coupland's Microserfs, which is a bit I started halfheartedly doing like 20 years ago.
Before you ask:
- 4x iPod Classic
- 2x iPod Shuffle (2nd, 4th generation)
- 1x iPod Mini
Because I know you want the skinny, we spent most of our Friday night in the Annex because when we're stuck for a plan on a Friday night we just, like, deposit ourselves somewhere where the people watching might be good, and then walk home. Most of tonight was spent in BMV buying books. I can't (read: won't) speak for my partner, but my edibles were c r u s h i n g me (but in the best possible way) while I was in the bookstore, which among other things led to series of excellent exchanges in one of my dynasty leagues' Discords, including this one:
ME: Stoned in book store is a top 20 stoned experience, 4.3/5. Stoned in grocery store is a solid 4.5, but stoned in bougie grocery store is a 4.6 Stoned in baseball stadium is a weird one; 3.5/5 during day games and 3.7 during night games
GUY 1: I'm at a point in my life where I only get high at home. Can't handle [being] stoned in public anymore.
ME: I’m like Pete Mitchell. I could be an admiral like Iceman but I just love to fly, so I am, and shall remain, but a captain.
GUY 2: I’ve never liked it in public. Especially on [an edible].
ME: I’m a daywalker, like Blade.
The bookstore haul was good in the end. I came away with Cory Doctorow's Enshittification, Mark Kingsley's Universal Principles of Branding, and Andrew Sean Greer's Less, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018. My partner got Chester Himes' A Rage in Harlem and Charles Yu's Interior Chinatown.
I think I will be able to get through Less in a week.
More to come. Maybe.
