Met a buddy, LV, for a drink today. He and I have played against each other in dynasty basketball leagues for a few years now, and, over those years, and especially over the last year or so, have developed a nice little friendship. Winter is long, and while basketball is a panacea, I need to mix other things into conversations in and around hoop. No shade to buddies with whom I exclusively talk about sports with, but it's simply wonderful to know a guy capable of having really deep conversations about dynasty fantasy basketball but also other things. Case in point:
LV: Does the jetlag affect you at all? We were pretty gassed the first couple of days
Me: Lag usually gets me going [from] here to Europe, but I'm usually fine coming back. That said, I passed out in my clothes last night and woke up confused at 6am."
LV: Hahaha well travelling for such a long time is tiring, jetlag or not. Airports suck out my soul too.
Me: I love airports, I hate flying.
LV: I envy you.
Me: I just mean from the standpoint of a writer. They are liminal spaces. They don't actually exist as representations of cities or countries. They are designed for transitional moments.
LV: Have you read Marc Augé's non-place essay?
Me: No but now I want to. Link me pls. Also I really appreciate that I can have this kind of convo with you.

Is this the lead-in to a conversation about how it's extremely reductive to think that hardcore sports fans aren't well-read or interested in ideas including but not limited to Marc Augé's "non-place?" and a separate, related articulation of the frustration I have felt for forty years because this world really only wants you to be one thing when we are all many, many things?
Probably.
But that's not happening today.
