I'm still in Paris, where we're still doing our thing. This usually means "eating everything," "walking everywhere," and "looking at art." Today was no exception. Except the "looking at art" part happened at the Louvre.
Fun fact: I have been to Paris more times than I've been anywhere except Toronto (when I didn't live there), Montreal (when I didn't live there), and New York, but today was the the time I went to the Louvre. I can't really explain why. Things just never lined up properly. Today, they did.
I would tell you all about the visit but the only thing that's worth writing about is that seeing the Mona Lisa up close was surreal even though I'd seen pics and videos of it for forty years.
Everyone says the Mona Lisa is smaller than they thought it would be. I don't really get that. It's exactly as big as I thought it would be, or as I pictured it being. But make no mistake, there's something really special about it. Like, I don't know if it's a good painting, but I am 100% sure that it's a great artwork. It's also culturally relevant, important, and interesting. It's the example you use, the thing a few billion people instinctually visualize when someone says "painting", "valuable painting," "famous paintings" or "museum robbery." This makes it very interesting on top of the fact that it's actually interesting. "To lock eyes with the Mona Lisa is to bridge the world of art and science and to peer directly into the mind of a Renaissance genius," writes Isabella Feinstein. I get it. Seeing it was interesting and moving.
Also: I'm deep in the Delta-9 briar patch if you can't tell.
Also: watching people look at the Mona Lisa is actually more interesting than looking at the Mona Lisa.
Anyway, choons:
π΅π΅ Flying Lotus, "1983"
Don't cue forward. Listen the whole intro bit. The beat hitting at 00:56 is so much better that way.
π΅π΅ Beach House, "Space Song"
I will never stop loving Beach House, a belief that will forever be bolstered by seeing them play on a smallish stage in ~2009. Moreover, Beach House helped me understand certain things about what I liked about music, and why.
