As previously mentioned, I'm in Paris. As we flew all night and only got into our hotel in the late afternoon, we had a bit of an abbreviated Friday night in the City of Light, but still managed to find some fun.
First, a drink at L'Étincelle. This is a tradition of mine. Every time I'm in Paris, I go there at least once because L'Étincelle is the first bar I ever went to in Paris (or France, or Europe for that matter), way back in August, 2004.
Then a lot of wandering, mainly in the 5th and the Latin Quarter.
Then, later, we had a late (10:50pm local) dinner at Cafe Latin. There, I continued another personal tradition. Every time I'm in Paris I try a different bar/bistro's steak frites. At Cafe Latin this meant a hanger steak with pepper sauce and solid house cut frites. Back in 2004 it was an Entrecôte, frites, and haricot verts at some joint that doesn't exist anymore. As I recall, that night the couple at the table next to my friend Laurent and I gave us half a litre of wine because they had to drive back to Lille and didn't want to wrap their Peugeot around an arbre.
All in all, this is shaping up to be a good trip for reasons including but not limited to pizza. We've already secured a reservation at Oobatz and another one for Nnea in Amsterdam.

Boris Vian was a hell of an interesting guy, and should be remembered for more than this song, but still, "Le déserteur" is as good of an anti-war song as there ever has been. This part in particular floors me every time:
